The Department

Polish Language and Literature

The diplomatic, political, economic, commercial and cultural relations between Turkey and Poland, which date back more than 600 years, have gained great momentum in recent years, increasing the importance of Poland and the Polish language in our country, and heightening the need for people who speak Polish and specialise in different areas related to Poland.

The Department of Polish Language and Literature in the Institute for Slavic Languages and Literatures started its educational activities in the year 1992–1993.

Admissions have been suspended in the academic year 2000–2001 but have reopened in 2014–2015.

In the summer semester of the year 2018–2019, the Department launched postgraduate education within the Polish studies master’s programme.

During our 5-year undergraduate education, including the preparatory year, in parallel with the ever-increasing potential of the centuries-old relations between Turkey and Poland, we aim to train graduates who are well-versed in Polish literature, history, culture and society, as well as Polish language education, and to provide job opportunities in the fields of academia, politics, diplomacy and economy, while ensuring that our graduates can find employment opportunities in the fields of logistics, tourism, media, construction, energy and law. In order to provide a basis for this education, we encourage our students to benefit from the Erasmus exchange programme agreements with the departments of Polish studies at the universities in Poznań, Lublin, Gdańsk, Cracow and Warsaw, as well as our existing bilateral agreements. In addition, with the support of the Embassy and Consulate of the Republic of Poland, the majority of our students attend summer schools in Poland, providing them with the opportunity to experience the Polish culture first-hand, and to improve their knowledge of the language and the country. Moreover, within the framework of our annual “Polish Days at the Istanbul University” events, we organise activities which help our students see Poland and Polish from different perspectives. Thus, by offering our students an intensive course in Polish during their undergraduate education, and by ensuring that they learn the Polish language and culture in the best possible way, we strive to raise for our society individuals who are accomplished experts in this field.

In order to contribute to the strategic areas envisaged by our country, we aim to raise competitive, versatile and qualified individuals in the fields of Polish language, culture, history and literature.

During our undergraduate education, we aim to provide our students with a sound foundation for their post-graduation working life, by offering them the necessary training in the fields of logistics, media, construction, energy and law, where cooperation with Poland is increasing day by day. With this goal in mind, we encourage our students to benefit from our bilateral agreements within the scope of the Erasmus programme with the departments of Polish studies at the universities in Poznań, Lublin, Gdańsk, Cracow and Warsaw. In addition, with the support of the Embassy and Consulate of the Republic of Poland, the majority of our students attend summer schools in Poland, providing them with the opportunity to experience the Polish culture first-hand, and to improve their knowledge of the language and the country. Thus, we help our students learn the Polish language and culture in the best possible way by offering them an intensive programme during their undergraduate education.

Our curriculum has been meticulously tailored to ensure that, having completed said intensive programme, our students have the qualifications required by public and private institutions. Taking into account the needs of institutions and organizations for qualified personnel with a good command of Polish, we designed our curriculum in such a way as to also embrace cultural, political, literary and sociological developments in the Slavic world. Accordingly, in order to provide our students with extensive knowledge regarding the Slavic countries other than Poland, as well as professional qualifications consistent with our main curriculum, we place emphasis on Russian language education. Students are obliged to obtain at least four credits in each semester of the second, third and fourth year, which translates to the knowledge of Russian at the B2 level.
